This is a special tribute concert to Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973), one of the greatest sanctified gospel singers of her generation. A charismatic performer who accompanied herself on guitar, Sister Rosetta Tharpe combined spirituals with blues and swing music of the 1930’s and 40’s and became one of the most popular artists of the time. This concert features the historically important and continually vital artists who appear on the M.C. Records CD titled Shout Sister Shout! which has received numerous rave reviews.
A fine gospel singer, with a ringing, signifying voice, there isn’t a single vocalist worldwide better able to evoke the spirit of Sister Rosetta Tharpe than her famous singing and songwriting partner, the one and only Marie Knight.
The Holmes Brothers have been bringing their brand of gospel-inflected, spiritually moving and funky music to audiences all over the world since 1979, and on this tribute show, they serve as Marie Knight’s backing band, as well as performing their own stirring set.
Odetta is one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. Before Odetta, no solo woman performer (let alone an African American woman!) had toured the world singing folk, blues, Negro spirituals, jazz, work and protest songs, while telling the stories of America’s Southern experience.

Karl Jenkin’s Requiem
Conducted by Maestro Ken Staton
Saturday, May 5, 2007 ~ 7:30pm
Sunday, May 6, 2007 ~ 2pm
Tickets $10 - $15
In his new Requiem (premiered in England in June, 2005) the contemporary Welsh composer Karl Jenkins interpolates the usual movements of the Requiem Mass with a series of haiku settings in Japanese, moving between the liturgical view of death and that observed in the natural world. As the work progresses the contrasting spheres move closer together, with the last two haiku settings appearing within the Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Both are intoned by male voices in a monastic style as a counterpoint to the Japanese text sung by female voices. The instrumentation adopts a deliberate oriental air, with Japanese shakuhachi, Arabic darabuca, Japanese daiko and frame drums. Full of soaring and beautiful melodies the work has been referred to as “…the ultimate in postmodern Requiems…” (Music Week) Choruses from the university and community will join the UH Hilo Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Ken Staton, for the Hawai’i premiere of this exciting composition.
