The American version, authorized by Bram Stoker's widow, is complete with
a spine-tingling, vanishing Count; an obsessed sweet young thing who hides
puncture wounds at her throat with a silky scarf; foolish servants; and
slithery sanitarium patients. They all add to the eerie tale that spawned
our love for things that go bump--or gulp!--in the night. We've come a long
way since Dracula, but the effect is the same: one look and
we understand why he mesmerizes.
