BALLET FOLKLORICO DO BRASIL
A DYNAMIC MUSIC AND DANCE ENSEMBLE
$18 General, $16 Students/Seniors, $14 Children
Do Brasil has emerged into a powerful creative force and been applauded
for "serving as a bridge between ancient and contemporary dance"
by juxtaposing the sacred and the joyous, the old and the new. Powered by
the vision of Artistic Director Joselito "Amen" Santo, and a multi-talented
cast of spirited dancers, righteous percussionists, and playful martial
artists, the ensemble's intricate program of music and dance involves audiences
in an energetic celebration of Brazil's rich cultural heritage. Do Brasil
exposes the public to the beauty and diversity of Latin America through
movements and sounds including: the meditative "puxada," the energetic
"congole," the athletic "capoeira," and the rhythmic
"maculele" stick dance.
Part of a statewide tour coordinated by the Performing Arts Presenters of
Hawaii.
Acrobats in flowered pants?
With elaborate costumes and an array of distinctive instruments, Do Brasil
has performed for capacity crowds throughout the western region. Perhaps
most astounding are their inspiring performances of capoeira, the African
Brazilian martial art. Capoeira blends fluid floor movements with breathtaking
acrobatics. This unique art form has been called the "dance craze of
the '90s" and provides fascinating examples of the resilience of African
culture in the Americas.
