Rhapsody In Taps
Linda Sohl-Donnell,
Artistic Director
Rhapsody in Taps, a Los-Angeles-based
company, features dancers and musicians in a celebration of rhythm, tap dancing
and jazz music. The art of rhythm tap dance, the freedom of jazz music and an
original repertoire of innovative modern choreography makes an evening with Rhapsody
In Taps a unique visual and musical event. While honoring the tradition of tap
dance performed to live jazz, Rhapsody In Taps continues to break new ground,
creating tap works to classical music and a variety of non-traditional commissioned
music/percussion scores.
"Pure
virtuosity!"
The
Denver Post
"Nusantara"
brings together the lush, hypnotic sound of a gamelan orchestra with the
tinkling explosions of metal taps. Ethereal sensations. . . An aural feast.
. . emphasizing the deliciously complicated, fine detailing possible in
tap dancing."
The
Orange County Register
"Capturing
some of the elegant lines and vibrating stillness of Indonesian classical
dance. Pauline Hagino, Fred Strickler and Rashida Khan began the piece
(Nusantara) as a kind of pantheon of "tap gods."
Los
Angeles Times
"The
seven members of Rhapsody in Taps and the five-piece jazz ensemble that
accompanied them were really smoking during Saturdays one-night
stand. In fact, the dancers had the audience eating out of their hands
from the moment they started tapping out their fascinating rhythms
sometimes in solos or duets, other times in groups that spread across
the stage in ever-changing patterns of rhythmic syncopation."
The
San Diego Union Tribune
"Inspired
by an exhibit of recycled materials, "Dragonfly" features the
best faceoff yet between Sohl-Donnell and long-time collaborator Gordy.
Dancing on a slatted oak mat, her taps rang out in a clear, loud torrent
of hail and thenVip!she slide her foot across the slats, giving
up a wake-up call."
